Phillips Academy—Andover
Graves Hall

The restoration and adaptive reuse of Graves Hall transform an 1883 campus landmark into a highly functional administrative hub while preserving historic architectural character. The project balances contemporary operational needs with restoration of significant interiors, comprehensive systems upgrades, and improved building envelope performance.

Our design supports modern workplace requirements through a mix of private offices, open workstations, and collaborative conference rooms. A historically significant former chemistry laboratory—among the earliest at a U.S. secondary school—has been sensitively adapted as a flexible meeting and event space. Exposed timber and steel trusses and a restored stained glass window retain architectural prominence, while flexible furnishings and audiovisual systems support multiple uses.

A new fully accessible primary entry and canopy are sensitively integrated into the historic façade, reorienting the building toward the main campus approach and aligning with the restored historic stair and modernized elevator to improve access, wayfinding, and security. Together, these interventions ensure Graves Hall’s continued use through inclusive, durable, and thoughtfully integrated design.
