“It’s a subtle, sophisticated mix of old and new . . . that teaches valuable lessons about how aged buildings can be creatively reinvented and stitched into the fabric of our lives.” — Blair Kamin, Architecture Critic, Chicago Tribune

Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Simons Building for Mathematics

ABA/Annum’s renovation of and addition to Building 2 is the first major renewal and expansion within MIT’s 1.1M-square-foot Beaux-Arts “Main Group” building complex, completed in 1916. Fronting the Charles River with views of the Boston skyline, the 93,000-square-foot Simons Building houses the Department of Mathematics. Guiding ABA/Annum’s design was the goal of balancing heritage and preservation with contemporary and changing needs. The historic limestone façade was restored, and new, thermally improved steel windows that replicate the originals were installed. New systems, acoustic improvements, and code and accessibility upgrades enhance the day-to-day experience of the building for the 675-person mathematics community of faculty, students, and staff. New gathering and collaborative spaces, office renovations, new furnishings, and a 13,500-square-foot rooftop addition merge contemporary expression with historic character, providing the Department of Mathematics with a fresh identity that fits respectfully within the Main Group.

Cornell University Law School
Academic Center and Commons

Our initial Master Plan for Cornell University’s 200,000 GSF Law School focused on preserving historic resources, re-purposing existing buildings, and accommodating growth without expanding the campus footprint. Working with Law School faculty and staff, a conceptual plan was created, combining renovations with a new building initiative.

Springfield Technical Community College
Rubenzahl Student Learning Commons

Responding to the linear nature of the 764ft-long former storehouse, the design team created a series of nodes or “hubs” of activity throughout the building, each geared towards one aspect of student life. A heavily trafficked existing pass-through at the east end of the Student Learning Commons links north and south sides of campus, has been transformed into the primary entrance. The campus library, accessed via an open stair at this entry, occupies the second and third floors of the building’s east end, strategically located to take advantage of this pedestrian corridor and position it proximate to student services.
