Shaker Heights, Ohio

University School
Chilcote Commons

University School is an independent school for boys with two campuses in the eastern suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio. Our Master Plan for the Lower and Middle School campus, located within a National Register Historic District of Shaker Heights, proposes a multi-phase approach to renovation and expansion, retaining the essence of the original 1926 buildings while addressing changing academic needs.

The first phase of the Master Plan, the Chilcote Commons, has been completed. This phase creates a new security vestibule at the School’s main entrance and expands a cramped crossroads foyer as a large and welcoming reception area. An open stair connects to the woodshop and art studios on the lower level, while a glazed wall offers views into the redesigned dining commons. Round dining tables, by furniture maker Thomas Moser, are designed to seat individual student home rooms and be easily disassembled and stored for special events.
