Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum
Campus Master Plan

The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (CBMM) is dedicated to preserving and exploring the history, environment, and people of the Chesapeake Bay. The Museum’s 35 buildings, clustered around a series of open spaces on its 18-acre waterfront campus, together create a unique venue for exhibition, education, and events.

Our Campus Master Plan for the Museum focuses on the visitor experience in response to the Museum’s expanding mission and anticipated visitation growth. It includes approaches for arrival and wayfinding, collections conservation and presentation, and environmental resilience.

The Plan proposes demolition of four buildings, relocation of two historic buildings, and construction of six new buildings totaling an additional 30,000 GSF. The pedestrian network is revised, making the Museum’s lighthouse building a primary campus reference point for visitors, while an adjacent beach and living shoreline are restored and interpreted as new exhibitions.
