Robert A. Carroll
AIA, Associate Principal
Robert Carroll is an Associate Principal with extensive experience leading renovation, addition, and new construction projects for independent schools, colleges, universities, and nonprofit organizations across the country. His work emphasizes a thoughtful dialogue between contemporary design and existing architectural contexts.
Bob is currently serving as Senior Project Manager for the renovation of the University Library at the University at Albany—a mid-century modern landmark originally designed by Edward Durell Stone and a centerpiece of the campus. Recent completed work includes the transformation of a historic chapel into the new Performing Arts Center at Emma Willard School, as well as a major expansion and renovation at University School in Shaker Heights, Ohio—part of the school’s ongoing master plan.
Bob’s past project experience includes the renewal and expansion of the Boston Athenaeum—one of the nation’s oldest independent libraries—as well as the adaptive reuse of a historic armory for the Student Learning Commons at Springfield Technical Community College. He has also contributed to work at the historic Grolier Club in New York City.
Before joining the firm, Bob held leadership roles on projects at several leading academic institutions, including New York University, the University of Chicago, Columbia University, Cornell University, Harvard University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Bob holds a Master of Architecture from the University of Michigan and a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering from the University of Hartford. He is a registered architect in Massachusetts and New York.
Professionally, Bob is a member of the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP), a recent panelist for the 2025 UMassBRUT Symposium on “Envisioning the Brutalist Library,” and a frequent contributor to community initiatives such as KidsBuild and CANstruction Boston.
Outside the office, he enjoys travel, photography, and cycling.
